Decision makers don’t necessarily share your world view, and they may not care about your objectives or projects.

Carol Roth says “not invented here syndrome” is something you need to work around when trying to get people to say yes to you because it’s not their idea and they don’t have ownership.

Carol suggests you:

  • Convince people that your great idea is their great idea. And she also recommends getting more people involved to get buy-in so everyone takes ownership.
  • Try to mitigate risk, and if possible, take risk out of the equation. People may not get praised when things go well, but they frequently get attacked when things go wrong.
  • Put yourself in their shoes and know what they care about and what’s going to help them.
