Sometimes working in your business will be easy, and sometimes it will be hard. It might even feel like sheer drudgery at some points. This is why I loved the short below by Mel Robbins about why you need to bring the fun into your business and decision-making.
As you probably know, Robbins is a New York Times bestselling author and famous podcaster. Her most recent book, The Let Them Theory, was a huge success and she did a big book tour to support it.
Robbins said:
You have to bring the fun. If you’re scared, bring the fun. If you’re out of your comfort zone, bring the fun. If stuff is getting stiff and serious and the stakes feel high, bring the fun.
Robbins assured us that of course we’ll be afraid, nervous, or whatever when we are doing a big thing. She admits that she was even thinking about canceling her own tour at one point.
I think we all have been there.
Robbins coached herself out of the bad headspace by doing a reality check and a reframe. She reminded herself that she wasn’t performing surgery and that maybe she should lighten up a bit. She started to lean into the discomfort and began to bring in some fun.
Robbins shared:
One of the things I said to the whole team of 30 people that were there doing the show with us was, “How can we make this fun?” Because last night was not fun. Night one I was stiff. Like I had rigor mortis on stage. And the whole goal of having fun, it just helped me loosen up. It helped me bring the fun. And when I started to loosen up, it changed the experience, and it changed the feeling that I had.
By loosening up and letting go, Robbins realized that she loved physical comedy and her performance went to another level.
But, more importantly, she started having a blast.
Robbins reminded us that the more fun you’re having, the more fun everybody has around you.
Here is her advice to viewers:
Bringing the fun helped me loosen up and lean into the ride that I was on. And bringing the fun is going to shake things up in your life, in your work, and the way that you’re doing things, too.
Her advice applies to all aspects of your business, not just to presentations, pitches, and performances.
If there is no energy and spark in what you’re doing, maybe you need to bring the fun.
