We can get so bogged down in options and choices that we don’t make a decision in our business or in our life. Or, we make a decision, and it isn’t the optimal one. What if there was one question you could ask yourself that could act as your north star when you are deciding what to do?

According to licensed therapist Dr. Scott Eilers, there is. He says one simple question has completely changed his life and guides him to take effective action and make healthy lifestyle choices. The question is: “Who do I want to be?” Eilers explains:

I think for most of us, or at least for me, the default driving factor or driving force in my decisions is what do I want to do or how do I want to feel, or what would bring me the most pleasure right now? Right? Now, I don’t necessarily ask that question narratively in my own mind, but most of my subconscious decisions are based on the answer to that question.

This made perfect sense to me, and I think most of us can relate. But asking yourself “Who do I want to be?” will take you to a higher altitude and may inspire a better decision than doing something that would lead to immediate gratification.

Eilers says that asking himself that question led to recording this video instead of playing a video game on his phone, which would have been more fun. Eilers says he wants to be someone who is of service, helping the people who watch his videos.

I want to be someone who helps the people who read this blog to be more successful in their business and happier in their life, so I am writing this post that I hope will help you.

As a business owner, founder, or senior executive, who do you want to be? A confident leader? A mentor to your team? An innovator? What would you need to do right now to embody that person? What decision will you make to support that vision of yourself?
