I recently wrote a post about how to be more persuasive, which included skills anyone can learn. In this post, I want to talk about how you can be more magnetic and attract opportunities, which you can then convert into business or personal achievements using your new persuasion skills.
So, how can you become more magnetic? I liked the video below from Anna Runkle because she walks us through very specific small changes we can make in the way we interact with others to become more magnetic and charismatic. She believes that we can self-sabotage by doing things that block our presence. Runkle says:
The people who are perceived as magnetic, they’re not trying to impress anyone. They’re not monitoring themselves or chasing approval. They’re settled inside. And that steadiness is what everyone feels around them.
Runkle says when you stop editing yourself, people will notice. I think that’s right. Grounded confidence is very attractive – and definitely magnetic.
Do you really listen to people? Most people don’t, and the ability to truly listen to understand, versus listening to respond, is a super power you will want to cultivate. Runkle says:
Almost nobody really listens. I’m sure you’ve noticed. Most people are just waiting for their turn to talk. But when someone listens with their full attention, you feel it in your body. So try this when you’re in a conversation. Let go of your next sentence. Actually hear what the person is saying all the way through. And when you do, watch. They’ll settle down.
This works very well with current or prospective clients, and also with your kids or romantic partner. People are dying to have someone truly listen to them.
Along the same line, you can come across as warm and caring if you actually stop and pay attention to people. Really take a moment to see them. You don’t have to be fake in any way. Runkle says, “Warmth isn’t something that you put on. It’s what leaks out when you stop protecting yourself.” I love that.
She goes on to talk about physical presence, communication skills, and body language – and how you can use some easy techniques to get a good reaction from people.
I hope I’ve convinced you to watch this short video. I think you’ll find it hugely valuable.
