I’ve been a consultant for more than 20 years, but when Tony Catalano asked me what the most important parts of a strategy were, I couldn’t easily name them.

I was surprised to get caught off guard like that, so I suggested we do a Zoom call and pull apart the pieces of an effective strategy.

While I was clearly tempted to jump into tactics and action, Tony said the right place to start is with the team. That made sense to me. It’s important to identify your resources and determine any gaps.

I loved that he called the kickoff call the “You Are Here” call. I do that for my new clients as well.

We talked about setting a goal, and clearly articulating why that goal is key.

I jumped in with the importance of clear communication and getting buy-in from all stakeholders.

Tony recommended doing a post mortem and identifying any lessons learned after the goal is (or is not) achieved.

This was a rich conversation, and I am excited to share it with you, as you are undoubtedly doing some year-end planning.
